Uist Wool

£18.95

Uist Wool yarn is raised, sheared and spun in the Outer Hebrides. The original idea to build a new Mill in North Uist emerged from a collective will to find a fresh purpose for local fleece that would reconnect the community with their cultural heritage of wool-working. The sheep are local, the fleeces are treated and spun at the specially built community mill hub, and the resulting yarn is as woolly and warm as you would expect. One of the more eco-friendly yarn options around.

Being a Hebridean myself I have a huge soft spot for this yarn, and its WAY more wearable than the local yarn I remember from my youth - bobban socks, anyone? With socks like that you didnt even need the wellies…

From the Uist Wool Mill on the island of Grimsay in the Outer Hebrides, essential yarns for inventive minds and creative hands.

“Three miles down a winding single track road on the island of Grimsay, nestled into the hillside above the quiet rocky shore, sit the industrious buildings of the Mill & Wool Centre. Provenance is the foundation to our story. Wool is sourced locally, selected with care and processed at the Mill with a high degree of quality control at every stage of production. We are inspired by the work that our collaborators produce with our unique yarns. The results are our stunning knitting patterns, woven shawls, blankets and Harris tweeds.

Uist Wool is a social enterprise, born from a collective will to find a fresh purpose for local fleece that would reconnect the community with their cultural heritage of wool-working, and based on the principles of People, Planet and Profit, seeking to benefit the many, establishing sustainable practices and creating a viable enterprise to support the communities of the Outer Hebrides.”
